The Alternatives
Alternative milks, made with oats, soya, almonds and other types of plants have a much smaller impact on both the environment and animal welfare. And the industry is booming: from 2008-2019 sales of plant-based alternatives for meat and dairy nearly doubled, and as of 2021 one in three Brits now drink plant-based milk. Plant-based milks don't have to be refrigerated like cow milk does, making them perfect for bulk buying and storing.
Oat Milk
Oat milk is one of the lowest impact options out there, both for land use and carbon emissions. It also doesn't tend to have too distinct a taste, making it an easy option for switching from dairy.

Pea, Potato & Hemp Milk
Pea, potato and hemp milk are less widely available but they are also great low impact alternatives to cow milk. As with most crops, it can be grown organically and following Fair Trade practices.

Almond Milk
Almond was one of the first plant milks on the scene and one of the most widely available dairy milk alternatives on the market. While it does have a reduced carbon impact compared to cow milk, it's one of the most water intensive crop out of alternatives. As with most crops, it can be grown organically and following Fair Trade practices.
