Why Swap?

  • Parabens and other preservatives used in moisturiser can cause hormone imbalance and there are a raft of other common ingredients that have been found to be carcinogenic. Palm oil, a crop which is widely linked to deforestation, is also found in many moisturisers

  • There are unfortunately still many beauty and skincare brands that test of animals and many that use animal-derived ingredients, making them unsuitable for vegans

  • Every year the beauty industry creates more than 142 billion units of packaging a year, the vast majority of which is plastic

The Alternatives

Moisturiser and skincare packaging can be difficult to deal with and recycle after use, especially if it's not totally used up. Start by looking for plastic-free and low waste options, but if that's not possible look for recyclable packaging and schemes that allow you to return packaging to a brand for processing after use. Palm oil is linked to deforestation of some of the world’s most biodiverse forests and ecosystems, so we'd generally recommend avoiding it. Look out for our palm oil-free accreditation, which will mean a product typically uses vegetable or seed oils instead.

Palm Oil-Free Moisturiser

Eco-friendly moisturiser alternatives can allow you to not only reduce the footprint of your skincare routine, but also support cruelty-free and vegan ingredients. Well-known ingredients like palm oil have a very negative impact on the environment, and can appear under several names on ingredient lists, including 'palmolein', 'glyceryl' and 'stearate' – so look for our palm oil-free accreditation.

Generally, plant-based materials have a lower impact that animal-derived ingredients, so it can also lead to a better environmental footprint.

Homemade Moisturiser

It's easy to make homemade moisturiser at home with just a few ingredients. Look for basic recipes and guides online and adjust it to reduce the amount of synthetic, non-vegan and animal-tested ingredients in your moisturiser, as well as making use (and reuse) of containers you already own. Homemade products like this make great gifts, too!
